Chiropractic Care for Chronic Pain

When you’re in pain, you want to see a doctor and figure out what the problem is. Ideally, the problem is identifiable and fixable — perhaps a medication or minimally invasive procedure will help. However, for many Americans living with chronic pain, going to the doctor isn’t so easy. Here’s a look at what chronic pain is, who it affects, and how chiropractic care may be an affordable, all-natural solution.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is by definition pain that continues for 3-6 months or more. It may have an identifiable cause or it may not. Some chronic pain is relieved with medication or certain procedures, however, most of the time these interventions are mildly successful, if at all.

Who has chronic pain?

Anyone can become the victim of chronic pain. While this type of pain is often found in adults, teenagers and younger children can also suffer from pain that is unrelenting and difficult to treat.

How can it be treated with chiropractic care?

Often, chronic pain is caused by muscle tension, subluxations (misalignments in the spine), and inflammation within the joints and soft tissues of the body.

Chiropractic techniques, such as gentle manipulation of the spine and surrounding muscles, can help relieve ongoing pain by putting the body in a position to heal itself. When the spine is properly aligned, blood flow and range of motion is restored to affected areas causing discomfort. However, chiropractic care can also treat common known causes of chronic pain such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, whiplash, sciatica, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory arthritis.

What does this treatment involve?

The core of chiropractic care is using gentle manipulation techniques, sometimes using instruments, to restore alignment of vertebrae in the upper and lower spine. Additional treatments that may be used include TENS therapy (small electrical currents to stimulate and relax muscles surrounding the affected area, hot and cold therapy, ultrasound, and massage. With both types of chronic pain — pain with a known cause and pain with no known cause — chiropractic care has been found to be especially effective, even more so than traditional therapies in many cases.
